Confidence:

Belief in one’s own ability impacts accomplishment of goals.  Beliefs are formed as a result of interpreting prior successful or unsuccessful performances, vicarious observation of others’ performances in difficult situations, and verbal persuasion of others.  A strong sense of self-efficacy and self-confidence therefore helps guard against feeling overwhelmed in stress-provoking environments, and performance significantly improves when individuals believe in the cognitive and behavioral resources they have to successfully execute a task (Bandura, 1977)

Goal Setting:
Creating a plan of action or strategy for goal attainment is important in the goal setting process.  The plan is not only beneficial throughout the process of achieving the goal, but is also valuable as it provides individuals with a mechanism to develop new skills and practice creative problem solving (Locke, 1985)

Attention Control:
The first step in a successful intervention program is to learn about the relationship between attentional processes.  One must recognize what type of concentration is appropriate for a given situation.  Peak performers are able to assess environmental and physiological cues and use this feedback to shift to an appropriate direction of focus.  Peak performers are also able to learn and recover from distractions experienced in highly competitive or stressful situations (Nideffer, 1987)

Stress Management:
One can effectively manage stress by balancing moments of intense physiological activation with periods of recovery and relaxation.  Deliberate breathing and simple meditative techniques counter mental, emotional, and physiological stress by eliciting the “relaxation response” in the mind and body - resulting in decreased heart and metabolic rate, lower blood pressure, and slower rate of respirations (Benson, 1977)

Imagery/Visualization:
Imagery is a form of simulation that refers to creating an experience in the mind.  It is a skill that all individuals have, but do not always use.  Like any physical skill, the mental skill of imagery takes systematic practice in order to truly be effective. Imagery can be used in nearly ever aspect of human performance, be it during skill acquisition or during injury recovery.  Mentally rehearsing a motor skill is a significant performance-enhancing tool when used in conjunction with physical training of the body (Vealey & Greenleaf, 1998)
